EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE

FIVE STEPS FOR A GOOD CONFESSION
1.       Recall all your sins in a proper order
Recall all the sins committed against God’s Commandments and the Commandments of the Church. The sins remembered are to be noted down on a piece of paper, it will help in making a good confession without missing out any sin.
2.       Repent on these sins
Repent therefore, and turn to God, that your sins may be blotted out (Acts 3:19).
3.       Promise not to sin again
The knowledge of the consequences of sin and the occasions that lead to sin is to be considered.
It is also important to make a strong decision not to repeat these sins again.
4.       Confess to a priest all the sins
All the sins that have not been confessed in the last confession along with the sins committed until today must be confessed.
When in doubt, whether a sin has been confessed or not, it is better to include that sin in the confession. If any sin has been confessed previously with true repentance then there is no need to mention these sins in the confession again.  They have already been forgiven.  Is 43:18-19, Is 44:22, Is 38:17, Ps 103:12, Job 14:17, Micah 7:19, Is 65:17, Is 51:8, Jer 31:34, Heb 8:12, Heb 10:17.  In the confessional God not only grants forgiveness of sins but also gives the grace not to fall into sin again.  Ps 32:5-6, Prov 28:13, Baruch 4:28, Hosea 12:6, Hosea 5:15, Hosea 14:4, Baruch 5:1-2, Ezek 36:25-33
5.       Fulfill the penance given by the priest
After confession, if it is possible to fulfill the penance do it immediately or else if it is something that  can only be done later, do not prolong it.  Remember to offer thanks giving and praise to God who forgave your sins.  And if you remain for some time in the presence of the Lord, you may experience the grace of deliverance of sin and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.  Apart from this, every feeling of guilt will also be erased and you will receive the grace not to sin again.
